The Legacy was Taken Up

Formally, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller was employed in the company A.P. Møller in two short periods – 1932-1933 and 1934-1935 – and then from 1938 until his death, but naturally the father’s and therefore the company’s life was part of Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller’s life since childhood – daily life and work was inseparable.

The young Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller matured in the USA during the Second World War and soon after returning in 1947, he was able to relieve A.P. Møller. Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller became responsible for the day-to-day management of Maersk Line, the chartering department, a large part of the technical organisation, the insurance department, internal audit as well as contact with the affiliated companies.

Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller inherited his father’s life’s work when he took over in 1965. A.P. Møller took the initiative and created the enterprise which now was to be protected and managed. Developments were not halted and far-reaching decisions such as the establishment of Maersk Supply Service, extensions and upgrading at the Odense Steel Shipyard, expansion of the exploration and production of oil and gas and the transformation into container transport in Maersk Line in the range of only 10 years established Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller as a worthy heir.

A.P. Møller expressed his values in management through his daily work and at the time, the relatively modest number of employees was closer to the management than today and it was learning by doing for everyone. For that reason, in 2003 Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller initiated that the company values were put in writing and communicated everywhere in the Group to become an important guide for the activities of the individual employee.

When Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller stated that “I have great veneration for my father”, he expressed his esteem for the example of his father and his respect for the results. His father was the primary inspiration during his lifetime and Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller not only learned from him, but also lifted the legacy higher than the father.
